About Albion - Why choose Albion?

ALBION (meaning 'old England') turly epitomises traditional manufacturing at its very best!

In 1985 Albion® Saddlemakers was founded. Paul and Sherry Belton combined the perfect balance of tradition, revolutionary design, technology and precision fitting when they applied their own equestrian knowledge and experiences to aspirational and functional saddle making and fitting.

Through constant research and development, with the support of many of the world's leading international riders and trainers, Albion's ultimate goal was to design, manufacture and supply superior competition saddles, bridles and accessories worldwide that maximised horse and rider comfort, minimised interference and enhanced performance.

Chairman of Albion Paul Belton, past president of the Society of Master Saddlers, originally trained in design engineering and carries forward a real passion for technical research and development. This translates perfectly into the design and manufacturing of technical competition saddles. Alongside his engineering background, Paul is an experienced and talented rider who was classically trained by Ernst Bachinger the former Director of Training at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Paul has also competed on the National circuit including Wembley and Hickstead.

Sherry Belton, Managing Director of Albion, has an equally impeccable equestrian history having trained with dressage specialist Franz Rochowansky of the Spanish Riding School and competed successfully in both dressage and eventing. Referred to in the industry as 'Saddle Fitter to the Stars', Sherry has fitted saddles for many Olympians and professional riders worldwide for over 30 years including Ernst Bachinger, the Balkenhol family, the Bechtolsheimer family, Emile Faurie, William Fox-Pitt, Alain François, Sylvia Loch, Hans Peter Minderhoud, Margit Otto-Crépin, Herbert Rehbein, Guenter Seidel, Laura Tomlinson, Thomas Voss and George Williams.

These riders trust Sherry's exceptional saddle fitting experience and Albion's ability to correctly fit and find saddle fitting solutions for their horses.

Today, the family business, passing into the second generation of the Belton family, continues to flourish. This is evidenced by the exciting launch of the new brand extension Albion Couture House and the new division Albion Sporting in 2011. Remaining true to Paul and Sherry's original values and beliefs embedded deep within the company 30 years ago, Albion Saddlemakers continues to lead the way into the future of innovative saddle design, manufacturing and precision saddle fitting as an exclusive British manufacturer.

Internationally renowned brand Albion Saddlemakers is recognised as one of the leading British saddle designers and manufacturers in the world.

Bridle Fitting Instructions
  • Make sure the browband is not too tight and is not pulling the headpiece onto the back of the ears. The current trend is for the brow band to be slightly loose.
  • The throatlash must not be tight, as it will interfere with breathing and collection. To ensure comfort there should be enough room to place a clenched fist between the side of the horse's cheek and throatlash.
  • The buckles of the cheek pieces and noseband should be parallel and slightly below the corner of the eye (to avoid damage in the event of the bridle pulling across the face), and the arms of the cheeks and noseband must lie behind the horse’s cheek bones.
  • The noseband must lie at least one finger or 1cm below the cheekbones, as this is another pressure point area. If the noseband is placed too high on the face it can cause great pain.
  • The buckle of the cavesson noseband must sit comfortably at the back of the jaw, in between the jaw bones, to avoid creating a pressure point.
  • The pad on the back of the crank noseband fastening should not connect to the front of the noseband, as this can cause pinching and subsequent sores.
